SATURDAY
& SUNDAY, AUGUST 15 & 16:
We
just stayed home and rested these 2 days. They were hot! Up into
the mid or even hgh 90's. And very smoky and hazy on Saturday, due
to a fire north of here. We'd
heard of Northern Calif forest fires throughout our trip, but had
always been far enough away that we weren't affected by the smoke.
Was much clearer on Sunday, so
they must have the fire under control.
Even
though a DRY heat, upper 90's is still hot! We talked about taking a
bike ride here in Marin County, or going to Muir Woods. But way too
hot for an enjoyable bike ride, and
not a pretty day at all. In fact, reminded me of the yucky hot
smoggy days we'd have in L.A. 45 years ago. Even
though a walk thru Muir Woods might be several degrees cooler, we
just couldn't seem to summon up the energy to leave our A/C RV.
What
great timing that on the days we'd more or less planned to stay home
from the city, we didn't mind bad weather keeping us inside.
So
we just rested, read, napped. I finally began All
the Light We Cannot See, which
came highly recommended by at least 2 people. 100 pages into it,
it's wonderful!
We
did attend church on Sunday. A small, non-denominational church just
up the road in San Mateo, named
Anthem.
It's part of the “Acts 29” movement. About 70-80 people were
there, and evidenced
a
very alive, dynamic, committed (and
welcoming)
spirit.
They are very missionally oriented, sponsoring a food bank for Marin
county, committed to reaching out to the wider community. One of the
satisfactions of travelling this way is getting to see how God is at
work and building His kingdom in each little corner of this planet.
As
we took a walk tonite, we noticed that there are several empty sites.
A week ago they were jam-packed here. Guess it's back-to-school
time almost everywhere, not just the mid-west.
